Jon Olson, a Black Hills native, gives a behind the scenes tour of Jewel Cave where he discovers buried treasure. At miles, Jewel Cave is the second longest cave in the world. It is filled. Location: Jewel Cave National Monument is in Custer County and is part of the south western Black Hills (Figure 1). The Monument lies 11 miles west of the town of Custer, South Dakota. Geology: The geology of the mapping area is in the Pahasapa (Madison) Limestone of Mississippian age which was deposited approximately million years ago.

Custer County, South Dakota, is trees and prairies, Black Hills and buffalo, small towns and friendly people, mining and logging, farming and ranching, history and memories. It is the home of the Crazy Horse Monument. Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park, where the Civilian Conservation Corps left many legacies, are here as well. Most of the cave was formed by slowly circulating, acid-rich groundwater. Its unique story begins with the geologic history of the Black Hills. The oldest rocks in South Dakota’s Black Hills are Precambrian-era igneous and metamorphic rocks, which formed under heat and pressure nearly 2 billion years ago.

Teepee Canyon is located approximately18 miles west of Custer, South Dakota, about 2 miles west of Jewel Cave National Monument off U. S. As soon as travelers leave the Monument they should look to the west, up slope, and begin to spot piles of broken rocks, big pieces.
